Association for Information Science and Technology

The American Society for Information Science and Technology (abbreviated ASIS & T) is an organization of information professionals. Her self-imposed responsibilities include the organization of an annual conference and the publication of their results and the publication of other magazines and books. The ASIS & T manages various subgroups whose members are entrusted with special tasks or staying in certain areas. It also assures support for training and further education in the field of information and documentation. In summary, one can say that the ASIS & T has developed since 1937 into one of the most important associations in the information and documentation in the U.S. and worldwide. Particularly noteworthy is the attempt of the ASIS & T, not to restrict activities solely to information professionals, but also representatives of similar occupational groups is to involve.

History

On March 13, 1937, the American Documentation Institute ( ADI) was founded, the forerunner of the ASIS & T. 1947, a link to the International Federation for Documentation has been received and three years later published the first magazine "American Documentation". On January 1, 1968 ADI was renamed " American Society for Information Science", " and emphasized the factthat the membership of ASIS is uniquely Concerned with all aspects of the information transfer process" 1 A name change was told the organization in May 2000 because " were appended and Technology ( & T) and so " to the existing shortcut ASIS, the words was the Increased focus on technology emphasizes ".

2013 was a further name change to ' Association for Information Science and Technology ".

Organization

Membership

The members of the ASIS & T come from all areas where information professionals work, such as from the library system and the communications and computer science. ASIS & T is the only professional organization in the U.S., so a bridge between different professions, as well as beats between information providers and end users. There are four different types of membership: regular, student, retired and institutional memberships, will be charged for each different membership fees.

Board and Representatives

All members can choose the following representatives: the President ( president ), the President-elect ( Elected -president ), the past presidents ( past president ) and the treasurer ( treasurer ). In addition, six general directors (directors - atLarge ), the directors of the local chapter meeting ( Chapter Assembly Director) and his deputy, as well as the Director of the Special - interest groups Cabinet Special Interest Group ( Cabinet Director) and his deputy. This put together the "Board of Directors ", the Supervisory Board is, which is the policy -making unit of the ASIS & T. As such, he manages the organization, directed a committee, concludes contracts and assuming all other typical tasks of supervisory boards. Most activities are, however, planned by different groups, which are presented in the following and performed.

Chapters

The Chapters (associations ) are small organizations that are regionally focused. They were also used by the Board of ASIS & T to maintain communication between members in certain areas. Each chapter elects its own leaders, and plans a program that addresses the specific needs of the local members. Typical activities include, for example, regional meetings, newsletters, workshops and courses.

Regional Chapters

Local associations there are almost only in the states or especially large cities in the United States, the only exception is the local chapter of "Europe".

Student Chapters

Student associations exist at major universities in the U.S. and often cooperate with the normal local associations. Your goal is on the one hand to indicate special needs and interests of student members and on the other hand to give information science students an insight into the employees in the ASIS & T and to make useful contacts.

Publications

Annual Review of Information Science & Technology ( ARIST )

Since 1966, the magazine ARIST is published with one issue every year by the ASIS & T. The magazine observed the professional community of information science and technology and provides the reader with an overview of current trends and developments. However ARIST also covers the most important topics in information science from classical (eg, information retrieval ) which are enriched by annotations to connect the information science with other professional societies.

Bulletin of the American Society for Information Science & Technology (Bulletin )

The Bulletin of the American Society for Information Science & Technology is published bimonthly and contains mainly texts on developments and issues that deal with the subject, practical reports and news about people and events in the field of information science.

Journal of the American Society for Information Science & Technology ( JASIST )

Under various names JASIST has been published since 1950. Today, it is a forum for research in information science sector and emphasizes particularly new, computerized information technologies and experimental work. Also abstracts will be published in JASIST. The main topics include: theory of information science, communication, management, economics and marketing and Applied Information Sciences.

Events / Conferences

There are two important conferences of the ASIS & T, the " ASIS & T Annual Meeting " and the " Information Architecture Summit", both of which take place annually. They attract not only information scientists, but also people from many other professions that are connected to the information sciences. During the sessions results are presented from the research and also assign prices for excellent work. Through the conferences want the ASIS & T all professional groups who come into contact with the information sciences, associate with this in order to better establish the general perception.
