Association of Free Democrats

The Alliance of Free Democrats (BFD ) was a coalition of liberal parties in the GDR. It was created on 12 February 1990 in advance of the first free parliamentary elections. Member parties were the former block party the Liberal Democratic Party, the German Forum Party ( DFP) and the FDP the GDR. Much like the Alliance for Germany ( AFD ) of the BFD hoped that by pooling the bourgeois- liberal forces a better chance at the parliamentary elections in 1990. Unlike the alliance the parties to the Confederation of Free were Democrats not individually, but with a common list for election to. During the election campaign the BFD was by the West German FDP supported.

On Election Day (18th March 1990) the Alliance of Free Democrats reached 5.3 % and received a total of 21 seats. His best result achieved much of BFD with 10.0 % in the district hall, home of Hans -Dietrich Genscher. The two deputies of the NDPD formed with members of the BFD, the Liberal Group and participated in the last GDR government under Lothar de Maizière. The BFD presented with Manfred Preiss and Axel Viehweger two ministers in the government of the GDR. This remained even after the termination of the coalition by the BFD on July 24 further in office.

On March 27, 1990, the former block parties LDPD and NDPD joined together as a party to the Alliance of Free Democrats; the German Forum Party ( DFP) and the F.D.P. the GDR continued to exist as independent parties. On August 11, 1990 in Hanover joined the Alliance of Free Democrats, German Forum Party ( DFP) and the FDP East Germany with the West German liberals to all-German FDP together.

After the accession of the GDR to the Federal Republic East Liberals were represented by Rainer Ortleb in the federal government.
