Background

The common basis of the Astro or cosmonauts - " against the will of the U.S. and the Soviet government " - led to the founding of the association in 1985, was the overwhelming experience of the sight of the Earth from space. Edited by Kevin W. Kelley on behalf of the Association of Space Explorers book The Home Planet ( German title: The home planet ) demonstrates in an impressive way by the effect which the sight has " a world " on the consciousness of people who have seen our home planet from space. Photos are collected from the earth and quotations from world space travelers from many nations in Kelley's large-format book that reflect the basic motivation of the members of the Association of Space Explorers vividly.

Ben Sultan Salman Al -Saud of Saudi Arabia on his impressions in orbit, for example, with the words: " On the first day of each pointed to his country. On the third or fourth day, each pointed to his continent. From the fifth day we no longer paid attention to the continents. We only saw the earth as the one whole planet " Ulf Merbold also ASE member, described his experience of space in the book The overview effect as follows: ". A property of the spaceship earth is that none of the passengers can get off. We are forced to travel through the dark all continue together whether all of us passengers are sympathetic or not. "Like other ASE members also says Merbold that humanity on earth " will not survive in the long term in a conflict " can.
