Assoro

Assoro is a municipality in the province of Enna in Sicily region of Italy with 5337 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Assoro is a municipality that lies 30 km east of Enna. The inhabitants live mainly from agriculture. It produces citrus fruits, cereals and wine.

The neighboring municipalities are Agira, Enna, Leon Forte, Nissoria, Piazza Armerina, Raddusa (CT ), Ramacca (CT) and Valguarnera Caropepe.

History

The city is mentioned by ancient historians, for example, by Pliny. Here dwelt the Siculi, the Greeks and the Romans. With the Normans it was passed in the Lehnherrschaft, which ended in 1812.

Attractions

The parish church dates from the 14th century, but was later renovated more often. Inside the church, the marble font and various wooden statues are worth seeing. The Baron Palace with an interesting balcony stands beside the parish church in Piazza San Leone II The origin of the castle is unknown. It can be seen, only a tower and remains of walls of the ruin.
