Assumption Parish, Louisiana

The Assumption Parish (French: Paroisse de l' Assomption ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 23 421 inhabitants and a population density of 26.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Napoleonville, named after Napoleon JL, a resident plantation owners.

Geography

The Parish is located in southeastern Louisiana and is in the southwest about 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico. It has an area of 944 square kilometers, of which 67 square kilometers are water surface.

In the West, the Parish is bounded by the Belle River, a tributary of the Atchafalaya, a tributary of the Mississippi. Not far from the Belle River is Lake Verret. Through the east of the Assumption Parish runs the Bayou Lafourche, which was formerly another tributary of the Mississippi.

History

The Assumption Parish was formed on March 31, 1807 as one of the 19 original Parishes. It was named after a resident parish.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2010 lived in Assumption Parish 23421 people in 8590 households. The population density was 26.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 8590 households lived statistically 2.69 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 68.1 percent white, 30.0 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian, 0.1 percent Polynesians as well as other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 2.0 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

23.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 62.0 percent were between 18 and 64 and 14.6 percent were 65 years or older. 51.1 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 46,699. The per capita income was $ 21,752. 18.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
