Astara (Persian استارا; Āstārā ) is the northernmost city in the Iranian province of Gilan and lies on the border with Azerbaijan.

Astara is a port city and is located on Iran - Azerbaijan border river Astara. The town has nearly 46,000 inhabitants.

Climate

History

The earliest mention Astaras dates from the late 10th century.

As part of the peace of Gulistan in 1813 was divided along the river Astara Astara. The area south of the river was henceforth to Iran, the northern part of Russia. According to the official division of the two cities developed to the starting point of trade between Russia and the north-western Iran.

After 1922, the Soviet Union was founded, the urban boundary and the Iranian part of the above- handling services still annually 16,000 tons of goods completed, lost its economic importance almost entirely to 1940.

1976 had 14,150 inhabitants Astara.
