Asteliaceae

Astelia hemichrysa is an endemic species of the island of Réunion.

The Asteliaceae are a family of monocotyledonous plants ( monocots ).

Dissemination

The types of their areas of New Zealand to New Guinea, from the Pacific Islands east to Hawaii, Chile, and on the Mascarene Islands.

Description

There are perennial herbaceous plants which develop rhizomes.

The inflorescences are branched with large bracts. The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and mostly ternate, individual taxa may, however, certain floral organs in greater numbers. The bloom are alike ( perianth ). It is formed a capsule or fruit usually a berry.

System

In the family of Asteliaceae there are two to four kinds with approximately 37 species:

  • Astelia Banks & Sol. ex R. Br, with about 26 species of the Mascarene Islands, New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand and Polynesia to Hawaii and Chile
  • Collospermum Skottsb. , With five species in New Zealand, Fiji and Samoa
  • Milligania Hook. f, with about five species in Tasmania
  • Neoastelia J. B. Williams, with only one type: Neoastelia spactabilis J. B. Williams in Australia ( New South Wales)
