Asterophrys turpicola

Asterophrys turpicola is a frog of the family -mouthed ( Microhylidae ). He belongs to the subfamily of Papua - mouthed ( Asterophryinae ).

Description

Asterophrys turpicola one of the larger Engmaulfröschen, it reaches a head-body length of up to 65 millimeters. The color is Olive Drab with black and dark brown spots and shades.

The head is very broad. The frog has a very big mouth that he can open very far to deter enemies with it. Yet his blue tongue is visible. Above the eyes spring thorn-like excrescences. Smaller excesses are located below the mouth. The entire skin surface is covered with smaller and larger warts, so that it resembles a toad. The fingers and toes discs are increased.

Dissemination

Asterophrys turpicola occurs mainly in New Guinea, both in the Indonesian part of the island, as well as in the western part of Papua New Guinea. In addition, the frog was found on the Indonesian island of Yapen.

Asterophrys turpicola lives in the plains and mountain slopes at altitudes of 1000 meters. The frog lives in the soil and lives in the litter and the fallen leaves of the rainforests. He was also found in less natural forests to plantations and gardens.

Way of life

Asterophrys turpicola probably like all kinds of Papua mouthed developed directly in egg without the tadpole in the water. The eggs may be placed for protection in caves. The breeding behavior has not yet been sufficiently explored.
