ASTM International

The ASTM International ( originally American Society for Testing and Materials ) is an international standards organization based in West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, USA. It publishes technical standards for goods and services.

ASTM was founded in 1898 by a group of scientists and engineers led by Charles Benjamin Dudley, who campaigned especially for action against the frequent rail breaks on the railways of the time. The group developed a standard to use for the steel quality.

In 2005, there were more than 12,000 ASTM standards. The focus of the work lies in the development of standardized testing and analytical procedures. The Annual Book of ASTM Standards ( Annual Book of ASTM Standards) now comprises 81 volumes. The membership is made up of manufacturers, users, governments and academics from more than 100 countries. Therefore, the company was renamed in 2001, ASTM International.

The use of ASTM standards is voluntary, except in the publicly funded sector of the United States.

The standards are published by the publisher Information Handling Services.
