Asynchronous communication

The asynchronous data transfer is a transfer process of Telecommunications, asynchronously with the characters, that is, at any time and are transmitted. The transmission is so, in contrast to the synchronous data transmission, are not aligned on a clock signal.

Bit-level asynchronous data transfer is plesiochronously: An approximate synchronism between transmitter and receiver is established and maintained only for the duration of a character. The procedure is also called start-stop processes. Since the requirements are lower on the quality of synchronism, he can be reached more quickly ( within a bit period ). Since this two bit times are allocated, the bit rate is lower than that of the synchronous data transmission.

Of confusion

The asynchronous data transfer should not be confused with the notion of asynchronous communication, which refers to the sequence of request and response in a communication protocol.
