Asyndeton

As Asyndeton (Greek: ἀσύνδετον, ( unconnected ), plural: Asyndeta ) is called in linguistics an unbonded bullets. Here, the actually expected conjunction ( connecting particle ) is omitted. The lined up without Conjunction words or phrases are grammatically and content assimilated and not increased.

Subtypes

Sometimes a distinction is the following subtypes:

  • Asyndeton adversativum ( contrasting enumerating - konjunktionslose two lists are compared with each other )
  • Asyndeton consecutivum ( folgerndes enumerate )
  • Asyndeton enumerativum ( innumerable enumerating - Asyndeton to demonstrate the Comprehensiveness of the enumerated )
  • Asyndeton explicativum ( explanatory list)
  • Asyndeton summativum ( resulting enumeration - the enumeration is then summarized in a )

It thus is a rhetorical figure of the group of phrases.

Effect

The fact that a asyndetic ranking is irrational and disorderly, it is often just outside of the context. This gives it an outstanding importance, which makes it possible to express, for example, the internal stress or the dynamics of a process in the whole text. A connected with a conjunction ranking is called Syndeton. The opposite of asyndeton is the Polysyndeton ( the multiply connected enumeration, such as " Unity and justice and freedom ").
