Ata-Malik Juvayni

Ala ad-Din Ata -Malik (or Ata -Mulk ) Dschuwaini (Persian علاءالدین عطا ملک جوینی, DMG ʿ ʾ ad - Dīn Alā Atā-Malik/Mulk Ǧuvainī; * 1226 Dschuvain; † March 5, 1283 ) was a Persian historian, who wrote the famous "History of the world Conqueror " ( Tuarikh -i Jahan - Guscha ) (completed in 1259 ).

Life

He was born in Dschuvain, a city in the province Großchorasan, which included the north of Afghanistan and the modern province of Khorasan in eastern Iran.

His grandfather was the sahib - divan or Minister of Finance of the last Khorezm Shah Jalal ad-Din. Dschuwainis father, Baha ad-Din, was a sahib - divan under Ögedei, the successor of Genghis Khan. During the absence of his immediate superior Baha ad-Din also acted as Deputy Emir Arghun Agha.

Dschuwaini itself was an important official of the empire. In his youth he had twice visited the Mongolian capital Karakorum ( Karakorum ), he began his history of the Mongol conquests in such a visit (ca. 1252-53 ). He was there when the Ilkhan Hulagu in 1256 the mountain fortress of Alamut occupied, and was responsible for saving a portion of their famous library. He had accompanied Hulagu during the sack of Baghdad ( 1258 ), and the following year he was appointed by him as governor of Baghdad, Lower Mesopotamia and Khuzestan. Around 1282 Dschuwaini lived in a Mongolian Kurultai, which was held in the Ala- Taq pastures north-east of Lake Van. He died the following year in Mughan or Aran in Azerbaijan.

Dschuwainis influential brother Shams ad-Din, who had served as finance minister under the khans and Abaqa Hulagu, was the husband of Choschak, daughter of Awak Zak'arean - Margrceli. Consequently, Dschuwaini had could not get through both his own work and his family connections to many information that other historians. For unknown reasons, the historical work Dschuwainis ends over twenty years before the death of the author in the year 1260th
