Ata Meken Socialist Party

The political party Ata Meken ( Kyrgyz Homeland ) is a business party and the main opposition parties in the Kyrgyz Republic.

Substantive Profile

The party is aligned socialist. It strives for a democratic state and for economic change. Furthermore, it demands social reforms. the party is based on the number of votes, the main opposition party in the political system of Kyrgyzstan. She is an observer member of the Socialist International.

It is close to several other opposition parties. So party members of Ata Meken to the meeting of the party Union of Democratic Forces were invited. In December 2008, the party merged with numerous parliamentary and extra- parliamentary parties to form the United People's Movement, but could not agree on a common single candidate for the presidential election of 2009.

History

Ata Meken was founded by former parliamentary speaker Omurbek Tekebayev in 1992 and registered on 16 December of the year. Major party members were Temir Sarijew and Erkin Alimbekow.

The party was instrumental in the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan after the parliamentary elections of 2005 and the expulsion of former Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev out of the country. It belonged to the party Alliance for Justice.

In the parliamentary elections in December 2007, which won the party Ak Dschol, she came indeed nationwide to over 8 % of the votes, but received in the district of Osh only 590 instead of the required 670 votes. They thus failed due to the 0.5 - percent clause, according to which a party must in every oblast and Bishkek and Osh in the cities to reach at least 0.5 % of the vote. Ata Meken tried unsuccessfully to prove in court that they had significantly exceeded the required number of votes.

After counting 84 percent of the vote Respublika reached in the parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan in 2010 with 5.8 percent of the vote for fifth place, making it one of the five parties represented in Parliament. In the election campaign Ata Meken was led by former parliamentary speaker Omurbek Tekebayev.
