Atacazo

The stratovolcano Atacazo located about 25 kilometers southwest of the Ecuadorian capital Quito.

The 4463 meter high summit of the volcano is dominated by a caldera with a diameter of six kilometers, in which there are three dacitic lava domes. Two other lava domes are located on the southeast flank of the volcano. During the Plinian explosive eruptions about 2300 years ago, pyroclastic flows poured up to 35 kilometers in the western valleys. Using the radiocarbon dating method could further large eruptions of the volcano around 6910 BC, 3490 / - 100 BC and 2490 / - 40 BC detected.
