Atakora Department
Atakora is a department of Benin, with its capital Natitingou.
Geography
The Department is in the northwest of the country, bordered to the north by Burkina Faso, on the south by the department of Donga, on the west by Togo, on the northeast by the Department Alibori and to the southeast by the Department Borgou.
Population
At the last census in 2002 counted 549 417 inhabitants the department.
Ethnic groups
The largest colonies are Bariba with 19.1 %, the Berba with 14.2 %, the Ditamari with 11.0%, the Natemi with 9.9 %, the Fulani 9.8% and 4.9 Otamari % share of the total population.
Religion
In contrast to the other regions of northern Benin, the followers of Islam are only a minority of 23.9 %. Approximately the same number of members ( exactly 24.0% ) is one of Christianity ( including about 82 % Catholics ). Thus, even confesses about half of the population to traditional creeds.
History
1999, the southern part was separated as Donga Department.
