Ataman

Ataman Ukrainian отаман / Otaman ( from turkotatarischen noun Ata = " father " and the suffix -man = " company ", also Turkish: ataman ) or the Polish Hetman was with the Cossacks in the Polish-Lithuanian name of a military rank, even their freely elected leader. After the partitions of Poland, this title of Catherine II of Russia was abolished.

Ataman was the highest rank in the Russian Cossacks. The Ukrainian Cossacks this was for the polish organized Cossack hetman, while the leader of the resident in the steppe Cossacks aware and called in distinction to the Cossack hierarchy in the hinterland Otaman.
