Atami (Shizuoka)

Atami (热 海市jap, -shi, literally " hot sea " ) is a town in the Japanese prefecture of Shizuoka.

History

The city was founded on April 10, 1937.

Attractions

The city is famous for its onsen ( hot springs ). Atami has been a resort since the 8th century and now part of the Fuji- Hakone -Izu National Park.

Many pieces from the extensive art collection of the eccentric multimillionaire and religious leader Mokichi Okada are housed in the MOA Museum of Art.

Another attraction is the Atami Ume Festival.

In the temple of the Goddess of Mercy ( Koa Kannon ) the last vestiges of the seven Japanese war criminals are kept, which had been put on trial before the International Military Tribunal for the Far East to death. In the temple there is a statue of the goddess Kannon Koa, which was donated by the responsible for the massacre of Nanking General Matsui Ivane and consisting of Nanking earth. The temple therefore is increasingly becoming a tourist destination for the Japanese.
