Atanas Dalchev

Atanas Daltschew ( born June 12, 1904 in Thessaloniki, † January 17, 1978 in Sofia) was a Bulgarian poet, critic and translator.

Daltschew graduated in 1922 in Sofia. His father was a lawyer and represented Christ Daltschew living in Macedonia Bulgarians in the Ottoman Parliament.

Atanas Daltschew published in 1926 his first anthology called Прозорец (window). In 1927 he completed his studies in pedagogy and philosophy at the University of Sofia. From 1945 to 1956 he lived under the pressure of the communist authorities and was only allowed to publish translations. Daltschew died in 1978 in Sofia.

Work

In his poems he deals in an artistic way with the problems of philosophy. He has translated poems and prose of French, Spanish, English, German and Russian writers. In 1967 he the Soviet Order of Honour of the Soviet Union (Russian: Знак Почёта, Snak Potschota ) awarded for the popularization of Russian in Bulgaria. In 1972 he was awarded the Herder Prize. His writings have been translated into many other languages.
