Atchison County (Kansas)

Atchison County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Atchison.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme northeast of Kansas, on the east by Missouri and has an area of ​​1127 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Doniphan County, Buchanan County and Platte County in Missouri, Leavenworth County, Jefferson County, Jackson County and Brown County.

History

Atchison County was formed on 30 August 1855 as original County and one of the first 33 counties that were formed by the first territorial administration. It was named for David Rice Atchison, a U.S. Senator from Missouri. On July 4, 1804, the members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition named the current flowing in Atchison small river as Independence Creek.

The first Europeans who entered this area were probably French traders who crossed the Mississippi in the first quarter of the 18th century. 1764 French traders along the Missouri River had settled. The Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804 wandered along the eastern boundaries of the county and later spent some time to explore the banks of the Missouri River.

In July 1854, the city of Atchison was named after David R. Atchison, founded by settlers.
