Ateas

Atheas ( born around 430 BC ) was a Scythian king of the 5th and 4th centuries BC In Greek sources he is mentioned as Basileus Skython Atheas, in Latin as Rex Scytharum. He died in the early summer of the year 339 BC in a battle against Philip II of Macedon.

Atheas ' historical position is not yet clearly understood. He is frequently in the research part or small king regarded as a western. This contrasts with the opinion Atheas was a central king, who managed to unite the whole Scythian kingdom.

In a few Scythian coin finds the king is shown as a typical Scythian horsemen with drawn bow, long hair and beard. In ancient sources Atheas is often depicted as typical, clichéd Scythian.
