Atebubu-Amantin District

The Atebubu - Amantin District is one of 138 districts in Ghana. It is located in the center of Ghana in the Brong- Ahafo Region, where one of 19 regional districts. The Atebubu - Amantin District emerged only by decree of John Agyekum Kufuor on 12 November 2003 from the Atebubu District.

The Atebubu - Amantin District borders the districts Sene, Pru, Nkoranza. At the district also borders the Ashanti region and thus the districts Ejura Sekyedumase and Sekyere West. Chief executive over the 6720 km ² large district with Cassius Osei - Poku is based in the district capital Atebubu.

Geography

The northwestern foothills of the Volta Dam reach into the district and form a major environmental factor as well as the transport of the district.

Economy

The population in Atebubu - Amantin lives predominantly on subsistence farming. Mainly are staple foods such as yams, cassava, rice and beans.

Overall, 63.3 percent of the population of working age are employed in agriculture. Another 19 percent are engaged in trade, six per cent in the industry. The district generates a significant food surplus, which is fed to the sale in domestic trade. The main customer is traditionally the area around the town Yeji whose inhabitants are mainly fishermen. A major problem in the food trade are the insufficient available storage facilities and cold stores dar.

In the district, gold deposits are in the areas around the towns Prang, KonKoMa and Parambo.

Infrastructure

In the district of a major portion of the traffic on the Lake Volta and the well -developed field for shipping traffic around the city Yeji runs. The Port of Yeji is also an important trading center for Tamaledie capital of the Northern Region. Through the entire district to roads that are built usually little and cause problems with passability especially in the rainy season,.

In the three largest cities Atebubu, Yeji and Prang post offices were established. A smaller post office was opened in Amaten. These three biggest cities are also connected to the fixed telecommunications network. In the district, the Agricultural Development Bank in Atebubu, the Ghana Commercial Bank Ltd. in Yeji which opened Kasei / Amanten Community Bank in Amanten and yapra Rural Bank with branches in Atebubu, Yeji and Abease.

The water supply in the districts is done by wells, boreholes, hand pumps, rivers and streams.

Education and health

With the Atebubu Government Hospital in the district capital Atebubu and the St. Matthias Catholic Hospital in Yeji in the district are two major hospitals available. Another three rural clinics, three health centers, four private birthing centers and four smaller urban hospitals are entrusted with the health care.

A total of four Senior Secondary Schools have been established in the cities Atebubu, Amanten, Prang and Yeji. In Atebubu has also opened a training center for teachers. A total of 50 nursery schools, 130 primary schools and 32 junior secondary schools are in the district at state educational facilities available. In addition, four private nursery schools, six elementary schools and two junior secondary schools operate.

In Prang a non-denominational vocational school was established in 2001. It goes back to an initiative of the Catholic Diocese of Konongo - Mampong and the " Association for the Promotion of the mission in the Catholic Diocese of Konongo - Mampong " in Pfronten ( Germany ). The name " St. Nicholas Vocational Institute " goes back to the supportive parish of St. Nicholas Pfronten ( Germany ), which is closely linked with the Ghana Aid Association just named and from which it has emerged. The Vocational Institute is nationally recognized, but receive no financial or other material support to the public sector.

The school is funded entirely from the school fees of students and funds from the Ghana Pfrontener help. Students receive training in home economics, the tailor craft or office work. All students receive instruction in the subjects of mathematics and English.

Constituencies

In Atebubu - Amatin District an eponymous constituency was established, the Emmanuel Owusu- Mainu of the Party National Democratic Congress (NDC ) won as a direct candidate in the parliamentary elections of 2004.
