Athabasca (Alberta)

Athabasca [ əθəbæskə ] is a village situated on the Athabasca River in Alberta, Canada, about 145 kilometers north of Edmonton. Athabasca has 2575 inhabitants ( 2006).

The settlement was created in 1877 by the Hudson 's Bay Company under the name of Athabasca Landing and expanded in the following decades, a fur trading post. During the Klondike Gold Rush Athabasca was a transit camp for the prospectors who went overland to Dawson. From 1912 to 1914, the city experienced a boom, which was attributable to the general boom through the construction of railway lines and the acquisition of land by settlers. The population rose to 2,000 inhabitants. The recovery phase back to the recession in Alberta in 1914 to an end.
