Athanasius the Athonite

Athanasios Athonites Άθανάσιος ό Άθωνίτης (* 925-930 in Trebizond (Trabzon ), † July 5 1000 ) was a Byzantine monk who founded the monastery of Great Lavra on Mount Athos.

His baptismal name was Abraham. After the death of his parents, he studied at Constantinople Opel. Under the influence of Michael Maleinos he became a monk at the monastery on Mount Kyminas in Bithynia. 962/963 he founded with the support of the Byzantine Emperor Nicephorus II Phocas on Mount Athos, the first major monastery and thus broke with the eremitical traditions. To 965 the rulebook was recorded in writing ( Typikon, Diatyposis, hypotyposis ) in the next Theodore the Studite also found the Benedictine Rule into account. The end of it has initiated wide-ranging construction work he did not live, he died in the review of a church building.
