Athenodoros Cananites

Athenodoros Kananites or Athenodoros of Tarsus ( ancient Greek Ἀθηνόδωρος Κανανίτης Athenodoros Kananítēs ) was a Stoic philosopher in the first century BC

Life

Athenodoros was the son of Sandon from the village of Qana in Tarsus ( in present-day Turkey ), probably a pupil of Posidonius in Rhodes and teacher of the Stoic philosophy in Apollonia in Epirus. He was drawn by the emperor Augustus in Rome, entrusted with the education of his nephew and later adopted son and successor, Tiberius and often also drawn by Augustus to rate. According to Suetonius Athenodoros spent a lot of time with the young Claudius, according to a letter of Augustus that was surprised by the rhetorical skill of Claudius. The historian Cassius Dio mentions that Athenodoros ( as well as his philosophical colleague Arios ) of Augustus was highly valued.

Pliny the Younger reported in the famous " ghosts letter " that a philosopher by the name of Athenodoros rented a haunted house in Athens and this was freed from the dwelling therein ghost - whether it however is Athenodoros Kananites, is not certain.

Athenodoros returned later - as reported Strabo - as an old man after Tarsus and devoted himself in local politics in his native town. His merits, which he had acquired through the implementation of a community order for this city were appreciated long after his death by a victim service.

From Athenodoros ' numerous, often the Athenodoros Kordylion writings attributed (eg against the categories of Aristotle, on the obligations, etc.) exist only Title and individual fragments. He also devoted Octavia Minor, sister of Augustus, a work.
