Athies (Somme)

Athies is a commune with 611 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region of northern France. The municipality is part of the Canton of Ham, and is part of the Communauté de communes du Pays Hamois.

Geography

The church in the countryside Santerre is on the right bank of the Omignon, a tributary of the Somme, and north of Autoroute A29 with the driveway No. 54 from the Department road D937 ( downgraded N37 ) in the municipality. In the north, the municipality extends to the D1029 ( Chaussée Brune skin). From west to east the D45 runs through the community. To Athies the district Fourques heard on the left bank of the Omignon. The hamlet of Les Vignes and Les petites Vignes on the north bank of the Omignon indicate previous viticulture.

History

In Athies remains of a Gallo- Roman villa have been preserved. In the village there was a Merovingian palace, whose exact location is unknown. This heading was Radegundis, later wife of Clotaire I. abducted.

In World War Athies suffered in the Battle of Arras, including through the blasting by the miners of British troops before the attack and the subsequent withdrawal of German troops, heavy damage. The community was awarded the Croix de Guerre 1914-1918.

Attractions

  • The Assumption church ( Notre- Dame de l' Assomption ) was built in the 12th century. Tower and vault were renewed after the First World War.
  • The portal of the church of Sainte -Radegonde is classified as a monument historique since 1862.
