The AMD Athlon 64 X2 is a microprocessor for computers. He belongs to the K9 - generation and is the dual-core version of the Athlon 64

Since mid-2007, AMD also offers notebook processors called Athlon 64 X2. These mobile processors are indeed related to Athlon 64 X2 for desktops, but based on a different processor core and will only be offered for a different processor socket.

General

The Athlon 64 X2 contains two processor cores and behaves in software so much like a two-processor system. This means that only the simultaneous use of several programs an increase in performance can be achieved, if not specifically tailored programs are used.

The processor was designed for Socket 939 and Socket AM2 and has a dual-channel memory controller (DDR with Socket 939, DDR2 in Socket AM2 ), which is shared by both cores. The processor also serves as the basis for AMD LIVE!.

Production

AMD also offers special versions of the respective processor cores with partially disabled L2 cache. The reason for this is that it is common in the production of that part of the L2 cache is defective. Since the processor is actually functional, the defective part of the cache is easily disabled.

There are also cases in which disabled with a defect in one of the cores of the processor and then as a single-core Athlon 64 or Athlon is sold.

Black Edition

AMD offers the Athlon 64 X2 5400 (based on the Brisbane core) a so-called "Black Edition ", which features similar to the Athlon 64 FX via an upwardly open multiplier. Thus, a relatively simple overclocking is possible. AMD aims with this affordable product directly onto the target group of hardware enthusiasts. The Black Edition processors are made in the new G2 stepping.

However, the addition of " Black Edition" does not automatically mean an unlocked multiplier. Thus, the Athlon 64 X2 6400 did not have, which was also available as a "Black Edition", this characteristic. But AMD also talked with this processor enthusiasts because it represented a long time until the release of K10 processors AMD's fastest desktop CPU.

Future

In 2009, the Athlon 64 X2 processors were replaced by processors on the K10 architecture, and withdrawn from the market. Until then, the Athlon 64 X2 and Athlon X2 processors were offered in parallel with the new AMD Phenom II and AMD Athlon processors.

Energy classes

The AMD Athlon 64 X2 is manufactured in different power classes. A distinction between the models is possible only on the basis of OPN. This number is located on the processor housing under the processor name.

Abbreviations

  • EE: Energy Efficient means that the CPU compared consumes less power, the power loss is less.
  • SFF Small Form Factor means that the power loss compared to EE was again significantly reduced. The CPU needed by a less complex cooling and is thus suitable for small computer case.
