Athrun, Libya

Erythron ( ancient Greek Ἐρυθρόν ) was an ancient city in Cyrenaica in Libya today.

The place is in various ancient authors (eg Claudius Ptolemy: Geographika 4, 4, 3) mentioned and can be identified with the present-day El Atrun. Erythron is close to the sea, about 20 kilometers east of Apollonia. It is uncertain when the city was founded, but there are no clear findings from pre-Roman times. There is also no pre-Roman mentions of the place. Especially in the Byzantine period the city flourished and can probably be referred to only for this time as a city. There are known various bishops and there were two richly decorated churches are dug.
