Athy

Athy ( Irish: Baile Átha Í ) is a town in County Kildare in the Republic of Ireland, with 9,588 inhabitants ( 2011). It lies at the intersection of the River Barrow with the Grand Canal.

History

The city developed from an Anglo-Norman settlement of the 12th century became an important military outpost of the " Pale ", the English possessions in Ireland. The first council constitution founded in the 16th century. The town hall was built in the early 18th century. The construction of the Grand Canal in 1791 and the railway connection in 1846 show the importance of the city in the past. In the anti-war song " Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye ", the city is the return location for a soldier.
