ATI FireGL

FireGL is a trademark of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and before the company ATI Technologies professional graphics card and refers to a series of professional 3D graphics cards, which, etc. for various applications in the fields of CAD / CAM / CAE, animation, visualization, simulation are certified. For games or normal office applications bring these maps, however, no advantage, although they dominate as their Radeon brothers also Direct3D. In 2008, AMD released the ATI FireGL FirePro brand from the brand.

ATI FireGL products used for the modified Radeon graphics chips in which amended by special circuitry, the GPU ID and special features such as "AA lines" will be released by the driver. With the FireGL graphics cards ATI competes with the Quadro series from NVIDIA and the now-defunct Wildcat series of 3Dlabs.

History

Originally came the FireGL series of Diamond Multimedia. The name itself was borrowed by designated with the suffix Fire professional graphics cards of the defunct German Graphics Cards pioneer Spea Software, who had initially bought Video7 and later went up in Diamond. The FireGL GL borrowed from the graphics API OpenGL and to establish the terms of 3D acceleration. In the area of professional 2D applications (image processing, multihead solutions for Exchange, medicine, etc. ) ATI offers the FireMV variants ( MV = MultiView ).

The first, developed by ATI FireGL card was the FireGL 8700 which is based on the Radeon 8500. The FireGL also offered by ATI 1/2/3/4, however, came designmäßig more of Diamond Multimedia and used IBM raster and geometry processors. The latter were pure OpenGL accelerator and only had very rudimentary Direct3D support. A 64- bit PCI version of the FireGL 3 was offered by HP as FireGL -UX for my HP9000 workstation series, where she was required twice the performance of the fastest VisualizeFX card ( VisualizeFX10 Pro). The FireGL -UX was also the last graphics card for HP9000 workstations with 64-bit PCI bus, in the last PA - RISC Workstation HP c8000 includes normal AGP versions of ATI FireGL T2, Z1, X1- 256P and X2 to the application.

Driver

The FireGL drivers of the Radeon -based FireGL cards are based on the current Catalyst drivers. During the Direct3D part is identical to the Catalyst drivers, the OpenGL part has been replaced with an optimized version for professional applications. Also, the control panel provides for FireGL cards significantly fewer settings than with Radeon graphics cards. For applications can be selected which activate certain driver settings under different profiles for many professional. Drivers are available for Windows and Linux. Unlike Nvidia, AMD is not serving the Macintosh market with the FireGL series.

Mobility FireGL

In addition to desktop models, there are also designated as FireGL Mobility mobile versions, which were designed for use in notebook computers and possess a variety of power-saving features. It is in principle for the Radeon Mobility variants identical GPUs. Unlike the desktop GPUs driver for Radeon Mobility FireGL and Mobility are the same.
