Atipamezole is an α2 -adrenoceptor antagonist and is used in veterinary medicine to reverse the sedative and analgesic effects of α2 -adrenoceptor agonists ( medetomidine, detomidine, dexmedetomidine, xylazine ). A small effect unfolds the drug on α1 -adrenoceptors. It is excreted by the kidneys.
Atipamezole has an approximately 100 times higher specificity to α2 -adrenoceptors as yohimbine. It can also be used as an antidote for an overdose of amitraz. The drug is administered intravenously or intramuscularly.
