Atis Kronvalds

Atis Kronvalds ( born April 15, 1837 in the municipality of Bunka, Courland Governorate, † February 17, 1875 in Vecpiebalga ) was a Latvian linguist, writer and editor.

He was born the son of a tailor and brought up by the parish priest in Durbe. After leaving school in Durbe and Liepāja, he worked as a private tutor. A medical school in Berlin had to stop because of shortage of money Kronvalds. He became acquainted with the positions of the Young Latvians by the newspaper Pēterburgas Avīzes and then on to one of its most prominent representative. In 1865 he moved to Dorpat and there published many papers and polemics against the Baltic German intellectuals. In 1873 he became a teacher at the parish school of Vecpiebalga.

Through his writings, he enriched the Latvian language to numerous neologisms or revivals of older expressions.
