Atlantic County, New Jersey
Atlantic County is a county located in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Mays Landing.
History
Originally, the County was inhabited by the tribe of the Lenni Lenape Indians. After the southern New Jersey has been explored in the 16th century by sailors of various nations, there was a further exploration by Henry Hudson in 1609. The first settlement took place in the summer Point, named after John Sommers, the overseer of the streets and the harbor was appointed Great Egg Harbor. First, the area still belonged to the Gloucester County. 1837 but it was separated as an independent County and determined as the administrative headquarters Mays Landing.
Geography
The county has an area of 1739 square kilometers, of which 286 square kilometers are water surface.

According to the census of 2000, there were 252 552 people in the county. There were 95 024 households and 63 190 families. The population density was 174 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.36 % White, 17.63 % African American, 0.26 % Native American, 5.06 % Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander residents from the and 6.06% from other races groups; 2.58% were descended from two or more races. 12.17% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 95 024 households out of which 31.70 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.50 % were married couples living together, 14.80% had a female householder with no husband. 33.50 % were non-families. 27.00% of all households and 10.70% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.16 persons.
Based on the county the population was spread out with 25.30 % under the age of 18, 8.10 % from 18 to 24, 30.60 % from 25 to 44 years, 22.40 % between 45 and 64 years and 13.60% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.60 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.20 males.
The median income for a household was $ 43,933, and the median income for a family was $ 51,710. Males have a median income of $ 36,397, women $ 28,059. The per capita income was $ 21,034. 10.50% of the population and 7.60 % of families are below the poverty line. 12.80% of those under age 18 and 10.50% were 65 years or older.
