Ray's bream ( Brama brama )

The Ray's bream ( Brama brama ) is a fish of the family of sea bream ( Bramidae ). It is also the name of Common bream.

Features

Bream are on average 40 cm long, the maximum length is specified with 100 cm. The heaviest caught bream but had a weight of 6 kg, the average weight of adult specimens should be closer to 2 kg. The fish can be up to nine years old. Bream have a stocky, laterally flattened body. The flippers are long and sickle- shaped, the tail fin is forked. The coloring of the shed in the area of ​​the back can go into the greenish-brown or bluish. The silver sheen of the flanks and the ventral side is intense only in living specimens.

Occurrence

The habitat of bream is the continental slope. You are ozeanodrome migratory fish, which means that they walk only in salt water. There they are found in relatively small flocks. They occur at depths of up to 1,000 meters, juvenile fish in depths of less than 2700 meters. In the southern hemisphere to 70 degrees south they are found in all seas, in northern latitudes to 65 degrees north only in the Atlantic Ocean. In sudden onset of cold fish can deviate from their routes and are washed up on beaches. This happened, for example, 1949-1955 and 1974-1976, in December 2008 and in December 2009 in the Netherlands.

Way of life

Bream feed on smaller fish such as the perch Emmelichytis nitidus nitidus, the lantern fish Lampanyctodes hectoris and salmon herring, and crabs, snails, cephalopods, amphipods and krill. Be eaten bream, for example commons dolphinfish, sailfish, blue marlin, white marlin, long-snouted spear, swordfish, bluefin tuna and spiny dogfish.

Spawning takes place in deep water in the months of August and September.

Edible fish
