Atlantis Massif

The Atlantis Massif is an undersea mountain range and is located in the Atlantic Ocean at about 30 degrees north and 42 degrees west. The massif reaches a height of about 3,000 m above the seabed, and the name derives from the possibility that the mountain a hundred thousand years ago sticking out of the water before it plummeted to about 700m below the sea surface ( see also Atlantis ).

Fame the massif in 2000 than in research submersible rides through the submarine Alvin (DSV -2) numerous hydrothermal vents were discovered.

The crew of Alvin to the researcher Deborah Kelley ( University of Washington ) offered a sensational sight; High white pinnacles and pillars that looked almost like the remains of a sunken town. These towers are made of crystallized minerals that occur when hot spring water meets cold in the deep sea. This hot spring water for about 30,000 years in the Atlantis Massif occurs probably out already. The area was named in reference to the legend of Atlantis Lost City.
