Atlassian was founded in 2002 by Mike Cannon- Brookes and Scott Farquhar in Sydney, who knew each other since their student days at the University of New South Wales. The company made 2011 sales of 102 million U.S. dollars and 26,000 customers worldwide. Other branches are made in San Francisco, Amsterdam and Tokyo.

The company was funded by a foundation loan of $ 10,000 and was for many years self-financed. In July 2010, it received 60 million U.S. dollars of venture capital from Accel Partners.

Atlassian is a provider of Enterprise 2.0 software. The products Atlassian are for the most part no open source software. The software is available but under a software license that allows customers to sift through the source code and modify. However, they are not allowed to publish or even sell the modified source code.
