Atlin Lake

The highest peak on the island in a freshwater lake

The Atlin Lake is the largest natural lake in the Canadian province of British Columbia.

The Atlin Lake is located almost entirely in British Columbia. Only the extreme northern tip lies beyond the provincial border in the Yukon Territory. The 145 km long lake has an area of 798 square kilometers, the lake level is 668 m above sea level, the maximum depth is 283 m. Other details are as follows: 589 km ² water surface, 775 km ² total area including islands.

On Teresa Iceland is the 2062 m high Birch Mountain, the highest peak on the island in a freshwater lake; this island is - as well as the entire south of the lake and its surroundings - part of the Atlin Provincial Park and Recreation Area.

The Atlin Lake is referred to in some sources as the origin of the Yukon River. The short Atlin River drains the Atlin Lake to the nearby Tagish Lake. At the level 09AA006 ( ⊙ 59.595277777778-133.81416666667 ) on outflow from the Atlin Lake, the average outflow 97 m³ / s

The name is derived from the Tlingit phrase Aa Tlein for "big waters" from.

To the east of the lake is the Atlin volcanic field.
