Atocha Municipality

The municipality Atocha is a district in the Potosí Department in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location in near space

The municipality Atocha is one of two Municipalities of the province Sur chichas and lies in the northern part of the province. It is bordered on the northwest by the province of Nor chichas, in the northwest of the province Antonio Quijarro, on the west by the province of Nor Lípez, and to the south and east by the municipality of Tupiza. It extends to 75 km in east-west direction and 65 km in north-south direction.

The central location of the municipality is the town of Atocha with 2,033 inhabitants ( 2001 census ) on the northern edge of the district.

Geography

The municipality Atocha is located on the Bolivian Altiplano in the northern foothills of the Andean mountain range, the Cordillera de Lípez. The region's climate is arid and has a clear diurnal climate in which the daily temperature fluctuations are stronger than the temperature variations during the year.

The annual rainfall is low 200 mm, with the months of April through October, virtually rainless.
