Atrani

Atrani is a town on the Amalfi Coast ( Amalfi Coast ) with 841 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the region of Campania, Province of Salerno in Italy.

Geography

The place is situated about one kilometer east of Amalfi in a small bay at the mouth of the creek Dragone into the sea. Town and beach form a kind of natural theater which opens to the sea. The Monte Aureo is regarded as a landmark overlooking the city. Atrani is by Fiera di Primiero ( Province of Trento ), the second smallest municipality by area in Italy. The State Highway 163 runs along the coast.

History

In the Middle Ages Atrani was part of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi. Maritime trade was also performed in this location to economic growth, which some merchants came to great wealth. They settled here build their residences and palaces. In the Cathedral of San Salvatore de ' Bireto according to tradition, the Doges of the Republic were crowned. The cathedral was completed at the request of the first bishop of Ravello by the year 1087. End of the 12th century it was the first time and received a redesigned Opel in Constantinople after original artwork by Barisano da Trani cast bronze portal. In the year 1272 a decorated with lions marble pulpit was installed. 1980 an earthquake damaged hard the house of God. In the 1990s, has started the restoration.

The people today have resorted in part to a sustainable tourism as a source of income, there are few small accommodations. The city was able to almost preserve its original character. Because of the steep slope and the many stairs there is virtually no traffic. Hiking trails lead from Atrani to the typical for the region of steep flights of steps to Ravello and along the coast to Castiglione del Genovesi and Minori.
