ATSF 3450 class

The class of 3450 Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway steam locomotive wheel arrangement comprised ten 2'C2 ', which were built in 1927 at Baldwin Locomotive Works. Initially, they were fired with coal, but converted in the 1930s to oil firing. At the same time the diameter of the traction wheels 73 to 79 inches, and the boiler pressure at 10 lb / in ² to 230 lb / in ² were increased. These changes resulted in a reduction in the starting tractive effort of 44,250 lb to 43,300 lb, but in return increased the maximum speed and efficiency. Their original application was the Midwest between Chicago and Colorado. Later, some were transferred to the San Joaquin Valley between Bakersfield and Oakland.

They were smaller and less strong than the later -added locomotives of the 3460, but were able to achieve a similar high speed.

The first -built locomotive, number 3450, was donated in 1955 to the Southern California Association of Railway and Locomotive Historical Society and is stationed in the Museum at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona ( California). The vehicle is not in working order, however, is externally well preserved and exhibited.
