Atsiki (Greek Ατσική ( f sg ) ) is a 848 inhabitants (conditions 2011) scoring village, administrative headquarters and a municipality in the north of the Greek island of Limnos. Until the administrative reform in 2010 Atsiki formed a separate municipality.

Location

The municipality is located Atsiki north of the island. The mostly flat terrain in the east is dominated by agricultural use. To the north and northwest, the terrain is slightly hilly and rises in the almost unpopulated northwest by at altitudes above 400 m. The north coast is the uninhabited island Sergitsi upstream, about 1.3 km from Cape Agrilia ( Ακρωτήριο Αγριλιά ). Neighboring districts are community Myrina in the west and Nea Koutali in the south. In the east, at the narrowest point with 4 km of the island bordering Moudros.

The municipality Atsiki divided into seven local communities. The population figures are from the census of 2011.

Demographics

The concentration of population in Myrina the administrative center of the island is associated with the decline and aging of the population of rural areas. The fluctuating population numbers in Atsiki the administrative seat of the municipality and the population increase in Agios Dimitrios, which is due to the secure income from the wine, this trend can not counteract a whole. Contrary to official figures, the actual population amounts to 2727 people.

Economy

The main industry of the municipality, agriculture is dar. With the exception of wheat and the wine production is almost only produced for the local market. The animal husbandry and the production of cheese are other important factors.

Agriculture

The agriculture of the region is characterized by low soil fertility, small areas, lack of water resources, outdated farming methods and a strong dependence on subsidies. The conversion to organic farming offers positive prospects of the region. The beginnings of organic farming has been made in wine production. The experience was followed by the cultivation of wheat, oil, citrus fruits and almonds.

The viticulture is characterized by the production of quality wines. Is grown mainly Muscat of Alexandria for the production of sweet dessert wine Muscat of Limnos ( OPE ) and the dry or semi- sweet white wine Limnos ( OPAP ) which is additionally pressed with Muscat Blanc. In addition, various local varieties are cultivated on a small scale.

Grain is produced in a high quality. Although the cultivation of wheat is subsidized, the most widely grown crop barley supplies because of environmental conditions, better yields. Alfalfa is also grown as animal feed.

Due to the sufficient availability of private grazing goats, sheep and cows are kept in pasture management. Due to the long tradition of animal husbandry Limnos is famous for the quality of the Kalathaki Limnou ( Καλαθάκι Λήμνου ) cheese produced from the milk of sheep and goats. A significant growth potential, the beekeeping represents the rearing of pigs, rabbits and poultry used for self-sufficiency, fishing is carried on a small scale.

The high-quality agricultural products are, however, contrary to non-commercial marketing and distribution methods.
