Atsumu Ohmura

Atsumu Omura (Japanese大村 纂, Omura Atsumu; * 1942 in Bunkyō, Tokyo ) is a Japanese climatologist, who was known for his contributions to the theory of global blackout.

Omura was born in 1942 in present-day municipality Bunkyō in Tokyo. In 1965 he graduated with his studies at the University of Tokyo with a Bachelor (B.Sc. ) from 1969 and earned a master's ( M.Sc.) at McGill University. Later, he earned his doctorate at the ETH Zurich.

Omura is a professor emeritus of the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science ( IACETH ) at ETH Zurich, where he led the climate research group of the Institute.

One of the main interests of the working group include the planetary boundary layer and the cryosphere and its interactions with the atmosphere and the oceans. The Group operates a global circulation model. Omura has also initiated the Baseline Surface Radiation Network ( BSRN ).
