Attapeu (also Attapu; Lao ອັດ ຕະ ປື - [ âttapʉ̄ ] ) is the capital of the province of Attapeu in southeastern Laos. Also known as Samakhi Xai town lies in the valley of the river Xe Kong at an altitude of 93 m. The area is sparsely populated.

In Attapeu is an important market for the region with food and everyday goods, and the only hospital in the province of primary care.

In May 2013 was signed with the Vietnamese Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group a contract to build an airport. He is to be built 26 km on the outskirts of the provincial capital. This is to the remote region attractive to tourists and investors.
