Attenuation length

The absorption length is the distance in an absorbent propagation medium in which the first incident radiation is absorbed to a predetermined remainder.

As required residual sometimes half is taken, but most of the 1 / e ( ≈ 0.37). e is the Euler number. The absorption length is material - and energy- dependent in general.
