Atwater is a city in the U.S. state of California, which is located in Merced County. With approximately 28,000 residents, the city covers an area of 14 square kilometers.

The city is officially since 1922, but first settlers found already in the 1870s in the area of the city. Due to the railway development of the area at that time Atwater was born.

Atwater is also known by the former Air Force Base Castle Air Force Base just outside the city limits. There is also an associated museum which attracts visitors nationally.

Population

According to the data collected in 2010 census, the population around 28,100, which represents an increase of 5,000 previously compared to those ten years was. The majority of the population consists of whites ( about 65 percent ), followed by Latinos. Their number has increased substantially since the beginning of the 21st century. Other population groups are African-Americans and Asian -born immigrants, both of which, however, represent minorities. The 2010 Census also recorded some 8,800 households in Atwater.
