Atzelgift

Atzelgift is a municipality in the Westerwald district in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Hachenburg. Atzelgift is a nationally recognized tourist.

Geographical location

The community lies in the Westerwald between Limburg and victories. Through the 287 m high place the Small Nister flows. Northwest of Atzelgift is Limbach, in the northeast and the southwest of Luckenbach Streithausen.

History

1396 Atzelgift was first mentioned in a document as Hatzelgufte. About Atzelguft the name has become " Atzelgift ". The name derives from Atzel (Elster) and Guft ( Shouting, yelling ) from and refers to a secluded place, " where the magpies call ". False, however, the legend of a Count Atzel and the dowry of his daughter.

1579 had Atzelgift nine and twenty houses in 1793. From the industrial past of the town still bear witness to the remains of the oil mills, one of which is about 100 meters west of the Ortsrandes at the Little Nister. She was still in operation in 1819; to see today is only the moat, which is about 100 meters up stream branches off from the Little Nister. Another former oil mill was about 500 meters west of Atzelgift that must have been built around 1870; Mühlengraben and location of the mill are still make out the terrain. Of these, only has the field name get " When Ollichsmüll ".

North West of the town were several iron ore mines; on the southeastern outskirts of the little Nister was originally an ironworks, which recycled the existing in the surrounding districts iron ores; she was still in operation in 1686. The field names " in the Hammer" and "On the hut play" point to this iron processing. In place of the iron and steel mill was built in 1697; this, however, was canceled in 1909 and built a new mill, which today serves only to generate electricity.

Parish council
