Augathella

Augathella is a city in the south of the Australian state of Queensland. It lies on the Matilda Highway / Landsborough Highway about 85 km north of Charleville and about 748 km west of Brisbane. How Charleville is also Augathella the Warrego River. At the 2006 census, 395 inhabitants were counted.

History

The city was founded as a resting place for drovers, since there are three cattle drive routes, Morven, Tambo and Charleville, met. Initially the settlement was called Burenda, later it was renamed in Ellangowan ( still the name of a cattle trough there) and in 1883 it was called Augathella. The latter name is apparently a word from the language of the aborigines, the ' water hole ' in German means and refers to the Warrego River. The result was a service center for the needs of the drovers and ranchers.

Today

The resultant in the 1980s Matilda Highway runs past the town to the east. Some new businesses have resettled just off Highway. There are in the city is a growing art center, a public swimming pool, a bowls club and once a year a rodeo. In addition Augathella has some Polocrosse teams.

Even today dominates the livestock economy of the city.

2011 was built at the entrance to a 4.5 m high sculpture of a meat ant ( Iridomyrmex purpureus ) in steel and copper. You want to a former football team of the city - called Mighty Meat Ants - remember.
