Augmentation (music)

Under Augmentation refers to the music the magnification of the time value of a note sequence with respect to a related motif. When a topic is augmented, the note is extended by its own value; so is a whole note from a quarter or a half note from a half. If the value of grades is reduced, it is called diminution. This method is often used in the composition of a fugue.

Augmentation can also be the interval structure of a piece of concern; then sound skips be increased in a sequence of tones. Also here is called the opposite process diminution.

Augmentation is a popular means of variation. If, however, note lengths or interval structure of the music are parameterized, you can because of the absence of a Bezuges no longer respectively of variation of augmentation / diminution speak: The term outdated and unnecessary.
