Augoustinos Kantiotes

Augustinos Andreas Kantiotis (Greek Avgoustinos Andreas Kantiotis Αυγουστίνος Ανδρέας Καντιώτης; born April 20, 1907 in Piso Livadi, Paros, Greece, † August 28 2010 in Florina, Greece) was a theologian, author and Greek Orthodox bishop and Metropolitan of Florina.

Life

Andreas Kantiotis studied after graduating from high school in Syros from 1925 to 1929 at the Theological School of the University of Athens. From 1929 to 1934 he was a teacher in the Cyclades. In 1934, he was the Metropolitan of Aetolia and Acarnania, Ierotheos ( Paraskevopoulos ) ( 1934-1961 ), appointed his secretary, based in Messolonghi. From 1934 to 1941 he was also Protosyncellus the Metropolis of Aetolia and Acarnania. 1935 received the diaconate and received the tonsure of the typical monk priest and the name Augustinos. In 1941 he moved to the Metropolitan See of Ioannina. 1941/42, he was a prisoner of the Italian occupation. In 1942 he received through Panteleimo, the Metropolitan of Edessa and Pella in Yannitsa the priesthood. He moved to the Metropolis of Thessaloniki and worked in Kilkis, Veria, Edessa and Florina. From 1943 to 1945 he was for Joakim Apostolidis, the Metropolitan of Kozani, active, who had fled before the German occupiers in the mountains. Despite persecution by the German Gestapo, he founded a soup kitchen and gave up to 8,150 meals a day out.

From 1945 to 1947 he was engaged in the Metropolis of Grevena. From 1947 to 1950 he was chaplain and preacher of the Second Brigade of the Greek army in Kozani. 1950/1951 he worked in the Metropolis of Karystia. 1951 appointed him Archbishop Spyridon Blachos for the first preacher of the Metropolitan Church of Athens.

On June 25, 1967 he was consecrated bishop of Florina, Prespa and Eordaia. On 14 January 2000, he resigned from his post. He died of kidney failure at a hospital in Florina.

He was the author of over 80 books on the spiritual life, several books have been translated into other languages. His sermons were read in the Orthodox countries. He was an innovator of the Orthodox faith. Kantiotes was an advocate of the traditional Greek Orthodox faith. He was set against ecumenism and very conservative. In 1952 he fought against the orientation of the Miss- Greece - competition.
