Construction

The first Augsburg railway station was built by the Munich - Augsburg Railway Company, near the Red Gate. Its historic hall served in 1880 as a military riding hall and houses since 1920, parts of the main workshop of the traffic department of the city of Augsburg. At Augsburg Central Station is a transit station with four non-accessible central platforms and nine through tracks as well as six other stump tracks. The track 1 is located directly on the back of the station building on its own platform.

Station building

The station building is a three-wing building. On the raised central block, the station hall is equipped with electronic display systems, ticket machines, an information booth and waiting facilities. In a wing of the customer center of the Deutsche Bahn is housed with ticket offices, in the other side wings are a food court and shopping area and the railway station bookstore to find.

The building was built in 1845, making it " the oldest railway - station building in a big city in the country, which is still in operation" ( inscription on a plaque over the entrance ). From 1869 to 1871, the architect Friedrich Bürklein has left the building rebuilt in the style of late classicism romantic.

The last extensive renovation and modernization learned the station building in the 1983 / 84th By 2007, particularly the catering area and expanded, and a new digital display board in the main hall has been installed. 2011/2012 the south wing was renovated, the waiting area for travelers and the hospitality sector further increased.

Station environment

Directly in front of the building there is a large plaza with a fountain, a parking lot with a taxi stand and a bus station for local buses. The square is flanked on both sides by shopping centers: On the one side is the Fugger city center, on the other hand, the Bohus Center with the Inter City Hotel.

West of the passenger railway station is the freight and former marshalling yard, which is, however, hardly used today (see freight). In the south, the former " internal loading area " were numerous old and mostly vacant buildings to be found, which were demolished in 2013 (see the future). Also right in the southern port of the station building is located, which opened in May 1972 central switchboard and the building of the Federal Police.

Traffic

Long-distance traffic

The long-distance train station Augsburg forms one end of the busiest railway line in Germany, the high-speed line Augsburg- Munich ( part of the Bavarian Maximilian train). In addition to intercity, Euro City and City Night Line trains here distribute the Intercity Express trains from Munich to Stuttgart and Nuremberg. In addition, the station is serviced by the French TGV.

This route is currently under expansion to a four-track high-speed rail (since summer 2011 only remaining work, but consistently passable ). Supposed to be part of the European high-speed highway from Paris to Strasbourg, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Ulm to Munich, Salzburg and Vienna finally together with the new and upgraded line Stuttgart- Augsburg.

In connection with the opening of the high-speed line Nuremberg -Ingolstadt- Munich in June 2006 and their full integration into the German ICE network timetable change in December 2006, became part of ICE trains - 30 of 120 by then holding in Augsburg distance trains - the north via Ingolstadt Augsburg instead. As a replacement for some long-distance trains from the Allgäu -franc Express was created with four pairs of trains daily and ICE -like journey times between Nuremberg and Augsburg.

To 2006, about 10,000 travelers were counted per day in the long-distance transport in Augsburg. With 90 Fernzughalten per day is the third largest city in Bavaria, according to web information, measured by the number of Fernzughalte, the third most important in Bavaria have been.

With the commissioning of new lines between Ebenfeld (Nuremberg, Germany ) and Erfurt and between Erfurt and Halle / Leipzig are (as of September 2010) ICE trains from Augsburg to Berlin are routed via hall.

The following long-distance transport lines run in Augsburg Central Station:

In the summer timetable 1939 regular visitors 87 long-distance trains per day over the Central Station.

Regional Transport

From Augsburg Central Station from Regional Express or Regional trains run to Bad Wörishofen, Donauwörth, feet, Hergatz, Ingolstadt, Landsberg, Lindau, Munich, Nuremberg, Oberstdorf, Schongau, Treuchtlingen, Ulm and Weilheim. Especially on the way to Munich occur regularly through the heavy commuter traffic on crowded trains, so here until the timetable change on December 13, 2009 trains were used with bi-level cars, which can carry nearly 1,000 passengers. Since then deal with the electric railcar BR 440 of the so-called Fugger Express extended to the S -Bahn - density regional traffic between Augsburg and Munich. Numerous technical glitches at the immature vessels had delayed the initial start of operation of new railcar traffic to a whole year. From December 2008 sparked between Augsburg and the Bavarian Weilheim Regiobahn DB Regio from; from December 2009 took over the Bavarian Regiobahn also operate between Augsburg and Ingolstadt Hbf Main Station

Bus and tram

As in any other major city has an outstanding position in transport in Augsburg Main Station and serves as one of the central hubs, why hold or end here numerous lines of the Augsburg Transport Association.

They can be accessed in two places: In the nearby Halderstraße the stop Hauptbahnhof is for the following lines:

  • Tram Line 3: Direction Bergen, Pfersee or Place Royal University and Haunstetten Inninger road
  • Tram line 4 towards the Royal Palace, Oberhausen and Augsburg Nord
  • Tram line 6 towards the Royal Palace, Hochzoll and Friedberg West
  • Bus 22 and 23: Direction Firnhaberau
  • Bus 32: toward clinical BKH or Royal Square and Zoo / Bot.Garten
  • Bus 43: Direction Deaconess House or Anna- Hintermayr - pin
  • Night bus 91: Direction Steppach, Bergen, Leitershofen, King Square and Oberhausen
  • Night bus 93: Direction Lechhausen, hammer mill, Firnhaberau or Royal Square and Hochzoll / South

All these lines except the line 43, which is operated by the company Storz be served by the Augsburg Transport Company.

Directly on the station forecourt is a bus station to find multiple bus platforms. There, start / end a total of 22 regional bus lines that operate from there in all directions and sometimes lead to the farthest corners of the collective territory of the GCU.

In addition, the station serves the collective field of the Augsburg Transport Association as the central transition space.

During the king space conversion (March 2012 until probably December 2013 ) in Augsburg main station we approached from the following lines:

  • Replacement bus B1: direction Goeggingen and Moritz Place
  • Replacement bus B3: the city or mountains Red Gate
  • Bus 22 and 23: towards the Royal Palace and Firnhaberau
  • Bus 32: toward clinical BKH or Red Gate and Zoo / Botanical Gardens

  • Night bus 91: Direction Steppach, Bergen, Leitershofen, Moritz place and Oberhausen
  • Night bus 97: direction Friedberg, high tariff, Mr. Bach, Moritz Square and Goeggingen

At the regional bus lines there are no changes.

Freight traffic

To the west of the passenger station is the back built to a large extent marshalling yard of Augsburg, which is divided into three areas. The rail yard south begins at Morell Street Station and extends up to the hump. The middle part consists of the track ladder and the eastern stitch and loading tracks. This is followed by the rail yard north joins which returns the tracks back to the main line.

The marshalling yard is only fit for the operation of local freight (together with the Augsburg Localbahn ) or as a parking area for cars and locomotives today. Furthermore, were also stationed track construction vehicles there. The stitch - and loading tracks to the southeast from the main train / Morell Street and Haunstetterstraße have been dismantled in part so that a passage of freight trains is limited to approximately every three hours. Due to this huge freight wagons traffic decline is the shift of the car changes after Rbf Nuremberg and Munich Nord.

For considerable criticism made the statement by the Chairman of DB Netz Augsburg, Axel Boss, freight transport in the future at a rate of up to 80 km / h through the centrally located in the station tracks to lead 5 and 7. Critics of this measure continue to favor a transfer of freight traffic on the track ladder west of persons platforms, primarily because in the near future is to be expected from an increased volume of freight traffic of up to twelve freight trains per hour which made the stay comfortable at the station is considerably reduced and noise protection measures for the protection of waiting passengers are not scheduled on the platform. This solution is therefore also seen as problematic because the upcoming refurbishment of the platforms and the expansion of the station to the station platform sixth F of funding for regional transport are supported. Critics accuse the web before, therefore, that would be an extension of the station unnecessary if the tracks 5 and 7 would continue to be available for the passengers and thus there is a subsidization of freight at the expense of regional transport.

Future

Mobility Hub Central Station

Under the project "Mobility Hub Augsburg " several structural measures are summarized, which will significantly modernize and expand both the building itself and the direct environment of the station. By the end of 2009, the entrance was enlarged and already provided access to the future tram tunnel.

Accessible expansion of the station

The Augsburg Hauptbahnhof is basically inaccessible to the disabled. There are no escalators or elevators in the station hall or on the platforms. The station hall is indeed reached by a ramp in principle, all platforms with the exception of track 1, but to enter through a tunnel, so far only lead to the stairs. He is to be expanded accessible primarily by its growing importance. Here elevators and access ramps to remedy the situation, so that at the end of the tracks are all measures to achieve barrier-free.

Extension of the platforms

Already owns the station in addition to the regular tracks 1-9 three more " intermediate tracks " (101, 501 and 801 named), which are found at the ends of the platforms from track 1, 5 and 8 respectively. For a possible S -Bahn for the Greater Augsburg the capacity of existing platforms today would finally passed, in part because the platforms are to be 5 and 7 centrally booked at the station in the future exclusively for freight crossings. Therefore, to eliminate this problem, a sixth platform with the tracks 10 and 11.

Construction of an underground tram station

Coinciding with the renovation of the tunnel under the rail tracks, from the be entered from the station platform to another tunnel to be drilled down a level in which this is then a tram stop. The access should be by the stairs and elevators that lead to the platforms.

Then, the line plans of the Augsburg trams are to be changed so that then four of the future six lines ( currently there are only five; Line 5 is in the planning stages ) Central Station Approach in 5 -minute intervals and so for optimum alignment of near- Regional and long-distance care.

Introduction of an S -Bahn -like regional transport

To help to bind the Augsburg surrounding areas to be a regional center, a tram Augsburg is established, which is however completely only in the distant future. As a precursor transport to the S -Bahn, the partial introduction of a compressed synchronized timetable for rail transport of the metropolitan area Augsburg is seen. This so- called "Regio - Rail Augsburg clock " has been introduced since 2007 in stages to the various railway lines. Here, the neighboring cities (especially Mering, Friedberg, Meitingen, Bobingen and Gessertshausen ) and all stations in the city area during rush hours and in some cases beyond are served at 15- minute intervals.

Measures in the station environment

In the immediate vicinity of the train station reconstruction measures in planning are also: The station forecourt, which now houses a constantly crowded parking lot and a bus station for local buses of the Augsburg Transport Association, is to be embellished and modernized by structural measures.

On the south side of the station were located until it was demolished in July 2013 a number of empty warehouses and buildings. It will offer a new district. Plans for a multi-purpose arena at this point, including for home games of the DEL hockey club Augsburger Panther were discarded.

Due to the underground tram stop new ramp structures are also in the surrounding streets needed over which the individual trams can return to the surface again.

Status of the measures

In December 2011, the zoning approval for the conversion of the main station was adopted, so that preparations can begin in 2012. 4 August 2012 began remodeling the main railway station, which is expected to last until 2019.

The tram line 6 was taken with the timetable change in December 2010, in operation, the line 5 is still in the planning phase. Further measures are closely linked to the progress of the redesign of the Augsburg King Square. The Augsburg city council has taken the decision Statute for the development plan number 500 " Royal Square and Augsburg- Boulevard " on December 16, 2010. On this basis, the work has been included for the conversion, which will happen over the years 2011 to 2013.

The Government of Swabia initiated at the request of the Federal Railway Authority in March 2013 a consultation process for the reconstruction of an additional platform at the main railway station in Augsburg. Concretely, the construction project adjacent to the new construction of an additional platform in Augsburg Main Station and the construction of a marshalling yard. Furthermore, part of the implementation of the required track plan change in the inlet and outlet to the platforms, the adaptation of overhead lines, the track field lighting, telecommunications and process control and safety systems in each relevant track field area, the construction of a siding at the breakpoint Inningen and block compression in Bobingen to the reconstruction measures.
