August Fick

Conrad Friedrich August Fick ( born May 5, 1833 in Peter Hagen at Minden, † March 24, 1916 in Breslau) was a German linguist and specialist in German.

Life

August Fick studied 1852-56 in Göttingen mainly under Theodor Benfey philology. He became a member of the Corps Teutonia Göttingen. Fuck worked since 1858 as a teacher at the local high school and in 1876 was appointed associate professor of philology at the University of Göttingen.

His main power is the dictionary of the Indo-European parent language (Göttingen 1868), in the 2nd edition as Comparative Dictionary of Indo-European languages ​​(Göttingen 1870, 3rd Edition 1874-76, 4 vols ) appeared. The work is also for the cultural history of great interest. It is considered the first complete compilation of all Indo-European languages ​​common vocabulary. This must therefore already be the Indo-European antiquity belonging. Accordingly, would result from him multiple conclusions about the culture of the common Indo-European era. In 1888 he was appointed a full professor at the University of Breslau. Fick died on 24 March 1916 in Breslau ( according to other data in Hildesheim ).
